Should I Build A Custom Home? Seven Questions to Consider.

The concept of building a custom home is appealing to many. The truth is, however, that the custom home building process requires a great deal of time and commitment.  Not everyone has the same goals.  Some people may be better served by a production or semi-custom home building process.  It’s important to consider your personality, lifestyle, and life stage to know the right time to begin the custom home building process and what to expect when you build a custom home.

Questions to Consider

Here are a few questions you may want to consider to determine if you are best suited to build a custom home or perhaps go a different route:

  1. Do you enjoy making decisions?
  2. Once you make decisions, are you generally satisfied with your choices?
  3. Is your lifestyle relatively low-stress?
  4. Are you able to meet challenges by looking for win/win solutions?
  5. Based on what is happening with your career or family, do you have some availability to devote to the custom home building process for the next 1-2 years?
  6. Is your career/family able to handle the additional activity?
  7. Are you in a position, financially, to begin the new home building process?
  8. Do you desire a high quality level of finishes, products, and accoutrements?
  9. Would you like to work with architect to create a unique design?

If most of your answers to these questions are yes, then you are probably ready to begin the exciting opportunity to build a new custom home! If some of your answers are no, you may want to explore further to determine if this is the best time or the best approach.  The custom home building process will require additional time, decision-making, and a financial commitment to ensure the best experience possible.  The process from lot purchase to move-in is roughly 9-18 months whereas a a production or semi-custom build may only take 6-9 months.

Architectural Design

A semi-custom or production build typically does not require an architect to be part of the process.  However, if you have plans (i.e. from an online platform) that you want to modify, an architect is likely required.  So, too, the custom home building experience typically always includes an architect, which allows each and every custom home to be completely unique.  This is a rewarding and enjoyable part of the process, provided there is collaboration between you, the builder, and the architect – early in the process.

Selections

Selections are another important part of the considerations to determine what type of building process will best suit your needs.  If you want the ability to select any products or material you desire, you may want to build a custom home. If you would like guidance with the selections process or are interested in our Client Concierge approach, this is another indicator that you’re in the right place.  However, if you would prefer to have a more simplistic process or perhaps your budget is more limited, then a production or semi-custom home builder may be the better choice.
